In a significant move to boost road safety, the Transport Ministry has announced that all two-wheelers manufactured from January 2026 onwards must be equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), regardless of engine capacity.

The new regulation aims to reduce accidents caused by sudden braking and loss of control. ABS helps prevent wheel lock-up during emergency stops, minimizing the risk of skidding and crashes.

Additionally, manufacturers will be required to provide two protective helmets that meet Bureau of Indian Standards specifications with every two-wheeler sold.

According to recent government data, two-wheelers accounted for nearly 20% of India’s 1,51,997 road accidents reported in 2022, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.

This rule applies to all L2 category vehicles manufactured after January 1, 2026, which must comply with the IS14664:2010 ABS standard. The move is expected to significantly improve rider safety on Indian roads.
